Dwarf Fortress Total Conversion Mods: From Mushroom Kingdom to Elder Scrolls

After starting life as Project Brazil and going through years of work, New California is set to drop on October 23, 2018. This has easily got to be one of the most anticipated total conversion mods for the franchise, with fully voice-acted characters and an entirely new story in a completely different location than the base game.

These are huge projects, nearly the equivalent of a full game development, and when you aren't getting paid and just have volunteers working in their free time, feature creep and lack of drive kill a ton of total conversion mods.

Thriving in a dwarven fortress sounds great, but you know what sounds better? Thriving in a dwarven fortress, with Pokemon. Dwarvemon, by FirePhoenix11, has stepped through the multiverse and added 898 Pokemon to Dwarf Fortress. This includes all of their evolutions, abilities, and even status conditions. Generations one through eight are covered, while Generation nine Pokemon are next on the list. This is definitely one for the history buffs and while other Crusader Kings 2 Dark Ages mods tend to follow a typically predictable historically-accurate arc, When The World Stopped Making Sense allows for more player autonomy as you craft yet another alternative timeline. It's still in development, however ten multi-century-spanning bookmarks are planned in total.

The other amazing thing about having Dwarf Fortress on Steam is the fact that in addition to the core game, players also have access to the Steam Workshop where they can effortlessly install or remove mods made by other players. Some of those mods are practical, like adding an audio tone to in-game alerts. Some are cosmetic, like increasing the different breeds of dogs you can have in your fortress. And some are total conversion mods, attempts to turn the game into something else altogether or fundamentally alter the way it plays. As of this writing, there are almost 100 mods available so far, and the game has only been out for a couple days.
