I have currently access to Internet provided via cable modem, with single Ethernet output port. From earlier, I have PENTAGRAM Cerberus P 6331-4A ADSL modem/router. Would it be possible, and how, to configure said ADSL router to serve just as a hub / switch, for sharing my Internet connection. I'm especially interested in using the WiFi part of it.
How To Configure Mtnl Sterlite Adsl Modem

when I look at this question to me like you got a modem/router from one isp, have since moved to another and their modem doesn't do any the fancy stuff the other one did, and since your switching from dsl to cable there's no way to use the original modem as a modem, but you still want to share your connection and use the wi-fi off the original modem. and while it's possible to plug in the cable modem and other computers in. and configure the old modem to act as a switch/AP instead of a dsl modem, it can't do NAT in that state; which is the key component of connection sharing. and I'm guessing the reason your asking about needing connection sharing is because the cable modem does not do that. one way you could find out if the cable modem is actually doing NAT and thus is ready to share the connection once there's a way for more then one computer to be physically connected to it, or not which then would require some other device to sit between it and the computers to do the NAT for the connection sharing to work. would be to check what Ip address your getting if it starts with 10. or 192.168. when your connected directly to the cable modem (without the dsl modem) then yes it is, and it won't be a huge issue to use the DSL modem; you just need to set the dsl modem to use the an ip on the same subnet as your computer got from the modem and turn off the dhcp on the modem and then it's ready to go as a eithernet switch and Wireless Access Point. but if you get an IP that starts with some other set of numbers then the two I got listed then that means to share the connection you need some device to do NAT that would sit between the two modems. and unless you have a wired router sitting around then it's going to cost just as much for a wired router as a wireless one and be a whole lot less hassle to yourself a wireless one. (if you do got a spare working wired only router, then use that to set up a shared wired connection between the cable modem and the router. then you can follow the same steps as if the modem was doing NAT, just remember to plug the reconfigured dsl modem into the wired router, not the modem)
Hi Socrates,I came here via your other post on configuring a router with MTNL, which in turn was on broadband forum. I have a netgear WGR614v5 router which I have been using with Airtel broadband (gurgaon) since 4 yrs now. Now I want to configure the same on MTNL broadband (in delhi).I assumed it would be as simple as connecting modem's wire into internet port in router and ethernet cable from lan port in router to ethernet port in laptop. however that didnt work. I used netgear's own CD to configure and when i did this for the first time, i managed to connect to the router and configured some settings, after which the screen went blank (after resetting router). now when i try to setup using netgear CD, its setup goes blank at the point of connecting to the router (192.168.1.1). I figured the problem is because the ADSL router given by MTNL has a default ip address of 192.168.1.1 already (as mentioned in ur post). however the steps mentioned by you arent working for me. I am still unable to access the router (in order to configure it to 10.10.0.1)can u suggest what I am missing here? thanks. (my mail id twilightfairy at gmail dot com - figured writing to u here might be better than at broadband forum)
ok i realised i was trying to connect to the wifi router n change its ip address while the mtnl modem was also on..rectified that, connected only laptop + wifi, configured to 10.10.0.1 and now its working! thanks!
i can't configure DLINK GLB-502T because 192.168.1.1 is not open in my desktop. I connect all things and ADSL led gets steady and also LAN led gets steady, but i can't open 192.168.1.1 for dlink modem configuration. please help me. My email id: thamilsakti@yahoo.co.in.I'm using BSNL BROADBAND.Download speed 1mbps.
Hi Socrates. Thank you, yours is an excellent walkthrough. My problem has to do with a different router however. I have a MTNL adsl connection which works fine. I have an old D Link DI 524 router lying with me which hasn't been used since 2007. The adsl connection comes in through a Sterlite 300MAX modem. I recently got my wife an ipad and decided to set up the wifi. I don't know anything about networking, but I did manage to figure out the following:- need separate ips for the router and modem- need to log into router at 192.168.0.1 and set it up. Need to log in to modem at 192.168.1.1 to put it in bridhe mode.Managed to do these things and I did manage to get to the point wjere I was getting internet through the router, but only on wired basis.Neither my laptop, nor the ipad could detect the wireless network. Created SSID, added WEP key- in the laptop and in router. But there is no wireless network showing.Having spent a few hours on this, one idea is to discard this and get a better router. But I thought I would just check if you have any ideas.
Hi,I have an old desktop which i connect to adsl modem via usb. (It does not have a LAN port) I want to use the laptop in a wireless mode.I am using MTNL T-KD modem and DLINK DIR-300 wireless router. The desktop has the usb driver for modem installed and connection is ok. I am not able to find appropriate tkd drivers for the laptop (windows7).
Though Linksys router/modem comes with a CD which has set up for making this work, it did not work for me. I had to configure everything manually. In case you have any previous settings, please reset to factory settings.
i wish u can help me with my connectioni have thomson speedtoutch modem 510 v6 which is locked and seems to be no way to unlock it,i try to upgrade, downgrade the frimware but its not working, my isp lock it.i need to foreword ports in the modem to be able to use p2p programsnow i got a new C-net router, i want to ask if i connect the C-net router to my adsl modem will disable the modem firewall so i can foreword the ports only on my C-net router? there is noway i can log into adsl modem web interface or if i did that i will be behind 2 firewall which will make my problem more complicated?
I have a similar set-up as mentioned in the article above, but not with a static IP. I have configured PPPoE option in my WRT54G, which is connected to the ADSL modem (MT880). The internet connection works fine for me. However I am unable to connect to the ADSL modem with IP address 192.168.1.1 from my PC which has an IP address of 192.168.5.100 (assigned by the DHCP of WRT54G). Any idea what the issue could be?Thanks,Srinath
I am trying to help my daughter configure herMacbook running Mac OS 10.5.8, connecting via airport to herCisco Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router, firmware v1.5, connected by ethernet cable to herDLink DSL-2320B ADSL2/2+ Ethernet/USB modem, which provides access to herAT&T DSL High Speed Internet service via PPPoE.

How to configure D-Link DSL-2750U N300 ADSL Modem Wireless Router with my BSNL broad band .Now I am using UTStarcom modem from the BSNL.The antenna broken so I brought one D-Link DSL-2750U N300 ADSL Modem Wireless Router. Plz help me.
I am having a bsnl broadband connection, with a sterlite wired modem. Some time back I connected a w/l broad band router (linsksys 2.4 ghz), so that I can work on my laptop also. It was working o.k. But, from last week, the link in the modem is not steady. The bsnl people say that it is due to some fault in the modem. But, i am not sure as it works ok, at times. Is it possible that due to modem fault, the link could be unsteady, or is due to the fault in the line. The voice line is sometimes noisy. Please advise. Also please suggest a suitable modem, in case replacement is needed.
sir please tell me how to configure beetel 450tc1 modem with bsnl. i have configured with lan properly! but facing problem with wireless, so can you please tell me the steps to configure beetel 450tc1 wireless.thanks in advance!!
Yes, now severe shortage of BSNL modems, and you can buy from Market. I will prefer DGN 1000 from Netgear or WAG120N from Cisco Linksys. Both are very good interms of speed and reliability. Got one from following guys through online. -modem-router/100253-netgear-dgn1000-wireless-wi-fi-adsl2-modem-router-in-india.htmlAdvantage of the Netgear DGN 1000 is that it is under 2 years warranty where as others only 1 year. 2ff7e9595c
